thereal1990s:

Drew Barrymore

Imma break this down for you:
- Tweezed eyebrows (90s homage to the 40s, I GUESS)
- Dark lipstick (Possibilities: Urban Decay; Revlon Blackberry; Chanel Vamp)
- Choker (I remember thinking chokers looked very sexy and alternative. I’m wearing one in my 11th grade class picture, along with a giant crucifix earring and a They Might be Giants t-shirt)
- Blonde hair w/ roots (Drew was one of the more visible celebs with this look, but obvs it comes from punk rock / grunge)
- “Vintage” 70s suede jacket with visible stitching - ultimate thrift store find. Just as the 2010s are about the 1990s and the (mid to late) 2000s were about the 1980s, the 1990s were about the 1970s. There was a major nostalgia movement. For the apex of this, check out LA zine “Ben is Dead“‘s Retro Hell issues. I used to have all three but I threw them out during a move and I deeply regret it.
- Cool 50s car in the background. This is getting more into late 90s but the swing dancing/Cherry Poppin’ Daddies/vintage chrome microphone look was huge, capitalized upon by the Gap’s “khakis swing” ad, one of my favorite all-time ads (I went to the Gap the next day and bought a pair of (men’s) khakis, which I wore with vintage t-shirts, Converse One-Stars and a punk rock belt until they fell apart.)
- Androgynous lesbian stance - Drew was way more vocal about her bisexuality in the 90s, which fed into this weird, celebratory moment about lesbians/bisexual women/androgyny in general (see also: Angelina Jolie; Jenny Shimizu). Not that it’s weird to celebrate that, just that it’s so antithetical to today’s brazillian wax/pole dancing ethos that I sometimes can’t even really remember what it was like, although I totally lived through it and lived by it.
Today’s 90s moment brought to you by Teenage Fanclub.

Also, I highly recommend the hilarious feminist blog 90s woman: http://90swoman.wordpress.com/
