maura:

I feel like this song is one of the influences on today’s “indie” that nobody really mentions. Mostly the tinny, sharp guitar tones, which I heard all over the place at CMJ (Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Gauntlet Hair, etc.). Not complaining at all, though.

Related: Brad Cohan interviewed Curt Kirkwood today for the Voice.

Related 2: I first heard about this band in the YA series Junior High. The “punk” girl, named Mia, carried a Chinese takeout box with MEAT PUPPETS written on it as her purse.

OMG, I thought I was the only person who read this (mostly terrible) series. TWo things I remember:

- Some bizarre parent-swapping fundraiser (?) where the rich girl had to be taught how to clean a bathroom because she’d never done it before

- The “health nut” girl who spent half a book trying to perfect a healthy snack food, which she ultimately decided was “some sort of complex carb”

I also was obsessed with the Girls of Canby Hall and Freshman Dorm series. Sweet Valley & the Babysitter’s Club get all the nostalgia love, but there were dozens of these series at the time.
